About UNHCR in Luxembourg

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, protects people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution.  We save lives, protect rights and help build better futures.

UNHCR in Luxembourg is part of UNHCR’s Representation for EU Affairs, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, which is based in Brussels (Belgium).

In Luxembourg, UNHCR supports the national authorities in executing its duties in line with international and European standards. UNHCR is not part of the asylum (international protection) procedure in Luxembourg. The asylum (international protection) procedure in Luxembourg is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Therefore, UNHCR in Luxembourg does not:

  • receive nor process applications for international protection;
  • receive nor process resettlement applications (to Luxembourg or other countries);
  • process applications for voluntary return;
  • provide accommodation, social or financial assistance;
  • issue refugee documents (including civil/travel documents).
