I need a lawyer and/or an interpreter in my case

You may request the participation of a lawyer the State provides free of charge at your asylum interview. To do that, before the interview, you can e-mail your request to [email protected] (indicating your ILTU number ).

If you want to appeal a decision rejecting your asylum application, you can request the assistance of a lawyer the State provides free of charge. There are two ways to do that:

  • You can send an e-mail to [email protected] (indicating your ILTU number * and contact information).
  • You can tell the official of the Migration Department, who will inform you of the decision.
  • If you are detained, you can submit your request to an officer of the State Border Guard Service.

Please note that as from 1 January 2025, in asylum cases, free legal aid is only provided in proceedings before the Regional Administrative Court. The law does not provide for free legal aid in proceedings before the Supreme Administrative Court.

If you want to appeal a detention decision or a decision on an alternative to detention, you can request the assistance of a lawyer the State provides free of charge. To do that, you can tell the officer of the State Border Guard Service, who will inform you of the decision. In detention cases, free legal aid is provided in proceedings before a district court and also in proceedings before the Supreme Administrative Court.

Please also note that legal staff of the Reception and Integration Agency may also provide you with additional information on your rights and obligation, including access to free legal aid, and provide you with counselling on your legal situation in Lithuania.

* The ILTU number is a number that may appear on documents issued by the Lithuanian authorities in your asylum case; if you need help to identify your ILTU number, ask for help from the staff of your accommodation centre.

You can also contact the Lithuanian Red Cross, which may be able to provide legal counselling in your case.

During the asylum procedure, if you need an interpreter, the Migration Department should provide you with an interpreter.
