Resettlement

I am a refugee or asylum-seeker in Japan. Can UNHCR resettle me in another country?

UNHCR does not resettle or relocate refugees, asylum-seekers or failed asylum-seekers from Japan to any other country.

I am a refugee and I wish to be resettled to Japan. Can UNHCR assist me?

The UNHCR Representation in Japan cannot assist in resettlement to Japan.

The Government of Japan’s resettlement program targets refugees who are currently in the Asian region. If you are a refugee outside Japan, but are physically residing in the Asian region, you should contact the UNHCR office that you are registered with to discuss your resettlement needs. Contact details for UNHCR offices around the world can be found on the UNHCR website.

Due to the small number of resettlement places available each year, resettlement is a solution which is only offered to a small number of refugees. Recognition of refugee status does not necessarily mean that you will be referred or considered for resettlement. There are several programs offered by the Government of Japan and the private entities targeting certain Syrian refugees (in Jorden and Lebanon) for settling in Japan through scholarship opportunities. It is recommended that you consult with UNHCR offices in Jorden or Lebanon or see the relevant information on the program at Japanese Initiative for the future of Syrian Refugees (JISR).
