For this procedure, you are entitled to free legal aid. Note that the appeal must be submitted <strong>within 15 days<\/strong> after the decision rejecting your asylum claim was notified to you. However, if you are an applicant for international protection and are a citizen of a <a href=\"https:\/\/island.is\/althjodleg-vernd-rettur-og-ferill-umsokna\/listi-yfir-orugg-riki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safe country<\/a> of origin, <strong>the time limit for appeals is five days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Immigration Appeal Board can either require the Directorate of Immigration to make a new decision in your case or confirm the negative decision made by the Directorate of Immigration that had rejected your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When appealing the decision to the Immigration Appeal Board, until there is a final decision made by the Directorate of Immigration or the Immigration Appeal Board, you are entitled to stay in Iceland with the asylum-seeker status. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your appeal is unsuccessful at all stages, you will have to leave Iceland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Directorate of Immigration provides assistance for voluntary return in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (<a href=\"https:\/\/finland.iom.int\/assisted-voluntary-return-and-reintegration-iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IOM<\/a>) and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontex.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frontex<\/a>). The return option offered to applicants is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
