It grants<strong> certain rights and services to those eligible, allowing you to stay in Hungary for a specified period<\/strong>. Temporary Protection includes access to shelter, social welfare assistance, medical care, education for children, and the ability to work without a permit. This status is distinct from the 30-day temporary residence certificate you may have received at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eligibility-for-temporary-protection\"><strong>Eligibility for Temporary Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>If you were in Ukraine before February 24, 2022,<\/strong> and crossed into the EU on or after this date, <strong>you are entitled to Temporary Protection in Hungary<\/strong>. This applies to Ukrainian citizens, refugees and stateless people recognized previously in Ukraine, and their eligible family members (including spouses, domestic partners, dependent children under 18, and dependent relatives living in the same household). If you are not a national of Ukraine, a refugee or stateless person previously recognized by Ukraine, or a family member of a Ukrainian national (or of a recognized refugee or stateless person), you are not eligible for Temporary Protection. <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/asylum\/\">Read more about access to asylum in Hungary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you are a Hungarian national and you fled Ukraine because of the war, you are not entitled to temporary protection, but you are entitled to the same rights and services as beneficiaries of temporary protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"validity-of-your-temporary-protection\"><strong>Validity of your Temporary Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The\u202f<strong>validity of Temporary Protection has been extended until 4 March 2027<\/strong>, across the European Union, including Hungary.&nbsp;In Hungary, this extension applies even if the&nbsp;expiration&nbsp;date on your card reads 4&nbsp;March of 2023,&nbsp;2024, 2025 or 2026. This document serves as proof that Hungary has granted you temporary protection and that your status&nbsp;remains&nbsp;valid. The certificate can be requested at any of the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhelp.unhcr.org%2Fhungary%2Fndgap-offices%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cmomandm%40unhcr.org%7Cd98a3853fb0a467df81808de4d2fd8a3%7Ce5c37981666441348a0c6543d2af80be%7C0%7C0%7C639033065039013868%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=SwrKq9A%2F5OVxeInFkfS%2FINJpXHAkG1zLQfIcl4R2gF4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NDGAP client offices<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"benefits-of-temporary-protection\"><strong>Benefits of Temporary Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Residency<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>You will have the right to reside in Hungary<\/strong> until 4 March 2027, which period may be extended. When you apply for Temporary Protection, you will receive a humanitarian residence permit valid for 60 days (also referred to as \u201claminated card\u201d). When the asylum authority grants you Temporary Protection, you will receive a residence permit (also referred to as \u201cplastic card\u201d). The granting of your Temporary Protection status (and receiving your plastic card) may take up to two months. <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/housing\/\">Read more about access to housing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If your humanitarian residence permit is due to expire soon, and you have not yet received your plastic card, you should contact the immigration authority for information. This can be accessed through a general practitioner or, if needed, specialized care or the hospital. Make sure to bring your documents with you, as the doctor might request them. If the letter could not help you, you may contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/partners\/hungarian-helsinki-committee\/\">Hungarian Helsinki Committee<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/partners\/menedek-hungarian-association-for-migrants\/\">Mened\u00e9k Association<\/a> for support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As an applicant and a beneficiary of Temporary Protection, <strong>you have the right to benefit from nursery care<\/strong> for your child, and have an obligation to enrol your child into <strong>kindergarten<\/strong> (age 3-6) <strong>and school<\/strong> (age 6-16). Public education institutions (nurseries, kindergartens, elementary and high schools) are free, but you need to formally enrol your child. <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/education\/\">Read more about enrolling to education<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Financial support<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you are granted Temporary Protection, <strong>you have access to financial assistance<\/strong>. The amount varies \u2014 HUF 22,800 per month per adult and HUF 13,700 per month per child. To apply for this assistance, you&#8217;ll need to register with the locally competent Government Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"applying-for-temporary-protection\"><strong>Applying for Temporary Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">You can <strong>apply for Temporary Protection at the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing<\/strong> (\u201cOrsz\u00e1gos Idegenrend\u00e9szeti F\u0151igazgat\u00f3s\u00e1g\u201d in Hungarian) <strong>client services<\/strong> in Hungary as listed below. You can <strong>also submit your application at the locally competent <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kormanyhivatalok.hu\/kormanyablakok\"><strong>Government Office<\/strong><\/a><strong> (\u201cKorm\u00e1nyablak\u201d).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/ndgap-offices\" style=\"text-decoration: none\">\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#E8E8E8;color:white;border-radius:10px;padding: 24px 24px 4px\">\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/hungary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2024\/07\/callout_ndgap.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20226\" style=\"width:70px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:14px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-88c004382487114cd0e0dfd38d0a6b02\">Click here to find the locations and contact details of the NDGAP Offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/a>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"returning-to-ukraine\"><strong>Returning to Ukraine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As a Temporary Protection holder, <strong>you can visit Ukraine for a short time without losing your status.<\/strong> Your residence permit will not be revoked, and you may return to Hungary after your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"moving-to-another-eu-country\"><strong>Moving to another EU country<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">You can only have Temporary Protection<strong> in one EU Member State<\/strong>. If you move to another country, the new country must provide you with the same rights and register you for Temporary Protection. Your status in the first country will be withdrawn. Always inform the authorities of your decision if you decide to move between countries in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"if-you-arrived-before-24-february-2022\"><strong>If you arrived before 24 February 2022<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you&#8217;re a citizen of Ukraine and <strong>arrived before February 24<\/strong>, <strong>you do not qualify for Temporary Protection<\/strong>. However, you can still apply for Temporary Protection, and you will likely receive a status called &#8220;tolerated status&#8221; (known as &#8220;befogadott&#8221; in Hungarian). Although it&#8217;s not the same as Temporary Protection, it allows you to remain in Hungary and provides you with some rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The tolerated status is reviewed by the immigration authority on a yearly basis. You are entitled to stay in reception facilities and receive care for 30 days after receiving the status. If you don&#8217;t have social security that grants you free public healthcare, you are still eligible for certain healthcare services.
