This modification aimed to ensure the safety and health of both the animals and the local population.

Requirements for bringing pets into Hungary

Starting from June 1, 2023, only companion animals from Ukraine that meet specific veterinary requirements will be permitted to enter Hungary. These requirements are:

Microchip Marking: Your companion animal must have a microchip for identification purposes.

Valid Anti-Rabies Vaccination: Ensure that your animal has received a valid anti-rabies vaccination.

“Positive” Rabies Titre Test: A “positive” titre test for rabies is mandatory. This test must be valid according to Annex IV to Regulation (EU) No 576/2013. The blood sample for this test must be taken by a veterinarian at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination. It should also be documented on the identification document. The titration test must be performed in a laboratory approved by the EU for this purpose.

3-Month Waiting Period: After a favourable blood test result, a 3-month waiting period is mandatory. This period begins from the date of blood sampling. A positive blood test result must be certified on the identification document.

Other animal companions

You can also bring pets like rabbits, hamsters, iguanas, and birds (parrots) into Hungary. The process for these pets is simplified, requiring only the completion of a registration form. Although the form primarily lists dogs, cats, and ferrets, make sure to provide as much relevant information as possible for your specific pet, leaving irrelevant cells empty, such as the microchip number for a hamster.

Import restrictions

Importing more than five pets is allowed, provided they are not intended for adoption or economic purposes. For instance, if you have eight dogs and intend to return them to Ukraine, this is acceptable. However, if you are travelling with more than five pets, it's advisable to use the border crossing point for vehicles at Chop – Záhony, where conditions are more favourable for inspections due to the permanent veterinary department.

Returning Pets to Ukraine

According to the European Commission, domestic dogs, cats and ferrets, who left Ukraine with their owners after 24 February 2022, can return to Ukraine.
