Seeking help with UNHCR

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is an agency of the United Nations, responsible for protecting people forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution and who cannot return without risking their lives, safety or freedom.

What UNHCR does around the world

Important: All UNHCR services are free

UNHCR and our partners will never ask you to pay for help or services.

We work around the world in many ways:

Working with local organizations
We partner with community groups, especially those led by refugees, to strengthen their ability to help displaced and stateless people.

Emergency aid and protection
We give life-saving help to people in crisis.

Support for refugee rights
We work with governments to improve asylum laws so refugees can get protection and their rights.

Finding safe homes
We help refugees find long-term solutions and a safe place to live.

Helping stateless people
We assist people with no nationality to get documents and access basic services like school and healthcare.

Inclusion in local services
We support refugees in accessing national schools, hospitals, and community services so they can live with dignity and help local communities.

Protecting people on dangerous journeys
Some refugees travel with migrants and face dangers like abuse or violence.
We work with governments and partners to protect them along key travel routes (this is called a route-based approach).
