What to do in case of an earthquake?

Ecuador is a country where many earth movements or earthquakes ⚡ can be felt. Most of the time, they are imperceptible, but if you are not used to them, they can cause fear. Before

Keep your family emergency plan handy and make sure that everyone who lives with you knows it.


During

If you are indoors:

  • Stay calm

  • Do not ⛔ run outside

  • Drop, cover, and hold on

  • Stay away from windows and objects that may fall

  • Stay away from trees and electrical cables

If you are walking:

  • If you are outdoors, move to an area away from poles, trees, buildings, or other objects that could cause harm.

If you are driving:

  • Drive to a location away from bridges or elevated roads

  • Park your vehicle in a safe area

  • Stay inside your vehicle until the earthquake has pa


After

Before entering your home:

  • Check that there is no structural damage.

  • Check if there are any injured people and, if necessary, seek medical help.

  • ⛔ Do not use elevators and be careful with staircases; they may have been weakened by the earthquakes.

  • ⛔ Avoid stepping on or touching any fallen or loose cables.

  • ⛔ Carefully inspect the damage; if it is severe (columns and/or load-bearing walls), do not stay inside.

  • Do not light matches, candles, or any open-flame or electrical devices until you are sure there are no leaks or issues with the electrical or gas system.

  • In case of gas or water leaks, report them immediately.

  • ⛔ Do not consume food or drinks that have been in contact with broken glass, debris, dust, or any contaminant.

Inside your home:

  • Immediately clean up any spilled liquids such as medicines, flammable, or toxic materials.

  • Use the phone only to report an emergency.

  • Turn on the radio to receive official information.

  • Open cupboards, shelves, or closets carefully, as objects may fall due to the earthquake’s movement.

  • Carefully inspect your entire home.

  • Keep in mind that there may be additional earthquakes, known as aftershocks. They are usually weaker but can cause additional damage.
