Rights and duties of refugees and asylum seekers

If you applied for refugee status in Ecuador, you have the right not to be returned to your country of origin, as well as the right to receive free legal advice, including throughout the process of applying for refugee status.

Remember that you have the same rights as Ecuadorian citizens, such as:

  • The right to life, liberty, and security

  • The right to education

  • The right to health

  • The right to justice

  • The right to work

You also have the same obligations as any other person in Ecuador. This means you must respect all the laws of the country.

REMEMBER!

  • If you have an international protection visa (2 years), you must renew your visa before its expiration date; otherwise, your refugee status will be reviewed.

  • To renew your international protection visa (2 years), you must submit certain documents. Get informed and seek free legal advice in advance so you can gather them on time.

  • If you have an international protection visa (2 years) and wish to leave the country, you must request authorization from the Ecuadorian State. If you do not do so, it may affect your case and your refugee status.
