{"id":98,"date":"2017-05-31T09:50:05","date_gmt":"2017-05-31T09:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/cyprus\/?page_id=98"},"modified":"2026-04-05T12:13:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T12:13:06","slug":"how-and-where-can-i-apply-for-asylum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/cyprus\/applying-for-asylum\/how-and-where-can-i-apply-for-asylum\/","title":{"rendered":"Applying for asylum"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Your rights during the asylum procedure<\/h2>\n<p><strong>As an asylum<\/strong> <strong>seeker in Cyprus, you have the right to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Apply for asylum free of charge<\/strong>, regardless of how you entered the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remain in Cyprus<\/strong> while your asylum application is being examined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receive information<\/strong> about the asylum procedure in a language you understand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be assisted by an interpreter<\/strong>, free of charge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have your application examined individually<\/strong>, based on your personal circumstances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have your personal information treated as confidential<\/strong> and not shared with the authorities of your country of origin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be interviewed<\/strong> about the reasons you are seeking protection, with the assistance of an interpreter, free of charge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receive additional support and safeguards<\/strong> if you have specific needs, including if you are a child, a survivor of violence or trafficking, a disabled person, or if you have a serious medical condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>When to apply<\/h2>\n<p>If you have valid reasons for seeking asylum, you must present yourself, together with all your family members to the authorities without undue delay and submit your application.<\/p>\n<p>If you are already in Cyprus and are afraid to return to your country because of events that occurred <strong>after your departure<\/strong>, you can also apply for asylum.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you have arrived in Cyprus by choice or unintentionally, you must apply for asylum in Cyprus once you are here, even if you intend to move on to another country under the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/cyprus\/applying-for-asylum\/the-dublin-procedure\/\">Dublin Regulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You have the right to receive information about the asylum procedure in a language you understand, and to be assisted by an interpreter, free of charge, when needed, during the procedure of submitting an asylum application.<\/p>\n<p>When you submit your application, <strong>your\u00a0fingerprints\u00a0will be taken<\/strong>, as well as the fingerprints of all your family members included in your application. This is a legal requirement. Children under the age of 14 are not required to give fingerprints.<\/p>\n<p>Each asylum application is examined individually, based on your personal circumstances and reasons for seeking international protection.<\/p>\n<h2>Where to apply<\/h2>\n<p>Upon your arrival in Cyprus, you can apply for asylum at any legal entry point to Cyprus, namely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Larnaca Airport,<\/li>\n<li>Pafos Airport,<\/li>\n<li>Larnaca Sea Port,<\/li>\n<li>Limassol Sea Port,<\/li>\n<li>Checkpoints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may also apply for asylum at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.cy\/mip-md\/en\/documents\/long-term-residents-lt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Police Immigration Office of your District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can apply for asylum even if you do not have a passport, identity card or any other travel or identity documents. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asylum applications are thus submitted to the Immigration Police, and the competent authority that receives the applications is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mip.gov.cy\/mip\/asylum\/asylumservice.nsf\/index_en\/index_en?OpenDocument\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Asylum Service of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you arrive in the areas under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus in an irregular manner, you will be referred to the First Reception Centre in Kokkinotrimithia, known as <em>Pournara<\/em>, for registration. In some cases, persons who are already residing in the country may also be referred to Pournara to prepare\u00a0 and lodge an asylum application. Once at Pournara, the authorities will help you in preparing and lodging your asylum application.<\/p>\n<p>For persons held in the Menogia detention centre, asylum applications are received directly within the detention facilities.
