{"id":2366,"date":"2025-04-15T17:28:37","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T17:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/canada\/?page_id=2366"},"modified":"2025-06-16T20:15:56","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T20:15:56","slug":"prevention-from-sexual-exploitation-abuse-and-gender-based-violence-gbv","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/canada\/important-safety-information\/prevention-from-sexual-exploitation-abuse-and-gender-based-violence-gbv\/","title":{"rendered":"Prevention from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Gender-Based Violence (GBV)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>What is<\/em><strong><em> sexual exploitation?<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is when someone uses their power or takes advantage of someone\u2019s trust or vulnerability for sexual purposes.&nbsp; It includes <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/canada\/important-safety-information\/important-human-trafficking-human-smuggling-information-for-canada\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/canada\/important-safety-information\/important-human-trafficking-human-smuggling-information-for-canada\/\">human trafficking<\/a> for sex and prostitution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is<\/em><strong><em> sexual abuse?<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is when someone forces or pressures another person into a sexual act against their will, either by force or under unequal or coercive conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is <\/em><strong><em>gender-based violence?<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-based violence (GBV) includes harm such as sexual, physical, emotional and financial abuse, both in public and in private. It also includes threats of violence, coercion and manipulation. This can take many forms, like violence from a partner, domestic abuse, sexual violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation and so-called \u201chonor crimes\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>! The consequences of those forms of violence can be devastating and can have life-long repercussions for survivors. It can have impacts on a person\u2019s physical, mental and reproductive health, and it can even lead to death. It can happen to anyone and anywhere \u2014 men, women, boys, and girls \u2014 at any age, with or without a disability, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you are victim or witness any forms of sexual exploitation or domestic violence, you have the right to seek for help and protection. <\/strong><strong>There are resources for you: <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit the government of Canada website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/health-promotion\/stop-family-violence\/services.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/health-promotion\/stop-family-violence\/services.html\">find family violence resources and services in your area<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For information and referral services for victims of domestic violence, please contact <strong>SOS domestic violence:<\/strong> 1-800-363-9010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If there is an emergency<strong>, <strong>you can also call 911 to reach to Canadian police or go directly to the police station<\/strong>.<\/strong> This is a free, emergency number you can call for help. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you fear being subject to human trafficking, please refer to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/canada\/important-safety-information\/important-human-trafficking-human-smuggling-information-for-canada\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/canada\/important-safety-information\/important-human-trafficking-human-smuggling-information-for-canada\/\">Important Human trafficking &amp;
