Registration with UNHCR
New Arrivals
How do I know when UNHCR will register me in Dukwi?
Once recognised refugees are released to go to the camp, the Government of Botswana shares the list of recognised names with UNHCR for registration in our system.
The names referred to UNHCR by the government for registration are also posted on the government and UNHCR notice boards in front of both the UNHCR and MoJ offices.
Where should I go for my registration appointment?
All registration activities take place at the UNHCR office unless clearly indicated otherwise.
It is your responsibility to regularly check the lists on the notice boards to see if you have been scheduled for an appointment.
Other Registration activities
The below List of Registration Activities that are offered by UNHCR, and partners happen every Wednesday from 2pm to 5pm
- New-born/Birth registration
- Issuance of registration-related appointments
- Replacement of Factsheet and Proof of Registration (‘Manifest’) documents
- Designation of New Focal Point/Household Representative
- Death registration and data update
- Spontaneous departures
- Update necessary information on an individual record, including change of address in the camp
- Activation- Being inactive does not affect your legal status in Botswana, however, it does impact your eligibility for assistance and services, for example, food and clothes distribution. To avoid being inactivated, please, stay in contact with the government office (MoJ) and UNHCR, and show up at verification exercises and food distribution.
- Replacement of Ration Cards
- Other Documentation
What should I bring to my registration appointment?
On your appointment date, please bring all documents that you have with you that are relevant to your case.
These can be:
- Passports and identity papers,
- Marriage, birth and death certificates,
- Family census or national identity document,
- Military service booklets,
- Medical certificates,
- Evidence of previous registration with another UNHCR office or a foreign government,
- Any other document
Do not worry. You can still attend your registration appointment even if you do not have any documentation.
UNHCR and our partner are available to support you in obtaining several documents, including birth, marriage, and death certificates, as well as business documentation if needed. Ordinarily, the government of Botswana through the MoJ oversees these processes.
For more information on civil documentation, please visit the government’s documentation website. You can also write to UNHCR directly if you have questions at [email protected].
