The Government of Botswana, through the Ministry of Health, provides free health services to asylum seekers, refugees and the Botswanan community.
There is one health facility in the Dukwi refugee camp, with health practitioners including a midwife, psychiatric nurse and general nurses, as well as health education officers.
At the local clinic in the camp, you can access the services below free of charge and as a walk-in patient:
- Comprehensive primary healthcare
- Maternal and child healthcare:
- Immunizations
- Pre-natal care
- Post-natal care
- Consultations for children
- Consultations for adults:
- Diagnosis and treatment of illnesses such as diarrhoea, pneumonia, malaria, Diabetes, hypertension etc.
- Basic nursing services
- Cleaning and dressing of wounds
- Basic laboratory services
- Rapid tests for malaria, blood tests including for blood sugar levels, etc.
- Pharmacy services
- Medical services for SGBV survivors
- HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis services:
- Testing, treatment, and counselling
If you or someone from your family needs specialised care that is not covered by the local clinic, UNHCR and health partner (Skillshare) can organize visits of specialist medical personnel for patients requiring these services following a structured criteria.
Asylum seekers and refugees who have conditions that require specialized care will be referred the general hospitals in Tutume, Francistown, Mahalapye or Maun.
UNHCR, with the support of the partner Skillshare, provides financial support for health travel and, if needed, accommodation to asylum seekers and refugees in Dukwi.
To get this support, follow the steps below:
- Approach the clinic in the camp for a consultation with a nurse or doctor
- If your condition requires specialized health care that is not available in the local clinic, a medical referral will be made for you to access these services at a referral hospital in Tutume, Francistown, Mahalapye or Maun.
- The clinic will also issue a supporting letter addressed to Skillshare requesting them to assist with transportation costs from Dukwi camp to the hospital and back.
- Take the medical referral document and the referral letter to Skillshare, where you will be assisted with a transport allowance.
- Remember always to take your ID, proof of registration and all relevant documentation.
ATTENTION! A doctor from Tutume referral hospital is available for consultations every Thursday in the camp.
