Instead, UNHCR\u2019s role is to support the development of national international protection systems that will provide, through independent lawyers and NGOs, quality legal advice to applicants of international protection and refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal representation and advice to applicants of international protection and refugees in Belgium is provided for primarily by private lawyers<\/strong>. In case you do not dispose of sufficient financial means to pay for a lawyer, <strong>you may ask for a <em>pro bono <\/em>(free) lawyer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways of obtaining a <em>pro bono <\/em>lawyer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>You contact your local Bureau for Legal aid, which will appoint a lawyer for you if you meet the conditions.<\/li><li>You choose and contact a lawyer who will submit the application for free legal aid on your behalf.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on the criteria to apply for a <em>pro bono <\/em>lawyer as well as on the procedure can be found here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocaat.be\/een-advocaat-raadplegen\/wat-kost-een-advocaat\/pro-deo\">Advocaat.be &#8211; Wat kost een advocaat &#8211; pro Deo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/avocats.be\/fr\/bureaux-daide-juridique-baj\">https:\/\/avocats.be\/fr\/bureaux-daide-juridique-baj<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the organizations on the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/belgium\/en\/where-to-seek-help\/general-services-and-helpdesks\/\">General Services page also provide free legal advice<\/a>.
